The size and weight you choose often depends upon the user's own weight, body type and stature. Many Occupational and Physical Therapists recommend that the blankets be approximately 10% of the user’s weight - particularly for children - and some professionals suggest adding one or two additional pounds of weight depending on the actual size of the blanket in relation to the user. A blanket should be approximately the height of the child plus a few inches for growth.
Most of the blankets I make for adults weight less than the recommended amount for children (10%) as adults find that the blankets become too heavy for extended periods of time - such as when they are sleeping. Many times, my clients were ill-advised to purchase a very heavy blanket of 20+ pounds and have come to me remake their blanket or purchase a new one with a more reasonable weight. Contact me for up to date research regarding weight for adults.
Caution should be exercised as the very heavily weighted blankets (20+ lbs in a standard size of 40" x 65" or less) were originally designed for individuals who required immediate and intense short-term therapy interaction due to a severe anxiety attack or for calming purposes due to high sensory overload in the case of some adults with autism.
These heavy blankets were not necessarily designed for sleeping. It is always recommended that you check with your health care professional if you intend to purchase a very heavy blanket or are unsure of the best weight for you.
Because I continue to do my own research into weighted blankets, I am able to advise clients regarding the physical size required. Weighted therapy blankets are intended to cover a single person and not a bed size.
Please note that there are no weighted blankets that will adequately work for more than one person at a time. Although some blanket makers offer a 'double', 'queen', or even a 'king' size weighted blanket, this defeats the very purpose of these blankets. Weighted blankets need to drape down each person to receive the full benefit of the weight and each person should have their own blanket.
For this reason, I do not offer 'twin' or 'double' or 'couples' sized blankets but, I do offer amazing blankets that are made for a specific person in a size which is appropriate for them.
GingerWraps weighted blankets come in four standard sizes and already include some weight. This is a starting point for most blankets and a finished size and weight will be decided when placing an order. Most Medium and Large blankets are requested to be heavier than the weight already included.
These sizes are a guideline for those unsure of what they should purchase. Please note that age is rarely a factor when deciding on a final size but I have shown it here to offer some perspective. Other information will also be used to determine the correct size for the person who will be using the blanket.
Small blanket "A"
Small blanket "B"
All sizes listed are the minimum size when completed. Some blankets will be slightly larger when finished. If you are specifically looking for a longer or wider blanket than the minimums listed, please advise me before purchase. Custom sizing is what happens here at GingerWraps - every day!
